PREGNANCY ULTRASOUND & BLOOD TESTS

AT A GLANCE

Pregnancy ultrasounds and associated blood tests provide valuable clinical information during early gestation and beyond. Ultrasound scans are used to confirm pregnancy viability, estimate gestational age, visualise the fetal heartbeat and assess single or multiple pregnancies.

Early gender blood tests can provide elective information when chosen. Prenatal screening like NIPT offers medically validated chromosomal information when performed from the appropriate gestational age.

IN DEPTH

Ultrasound imaging uses high‑frequency sound waves to visualise internal structures and is widely used in pregnancy care to confirm viability, gestational age, and to assess fetal development in early pregnancy. Private early pregnancy scans performed by our qualified sonographer can be particularly valuable for parents seeking early reassurance or planning additional prenatal care, supplementing routine NHS scans.

Blood tests such as early gender DNA tests and NIPT are conducted using blood samples and processed in certified laboratories. Early gender tests provide elective information about fetal sex, whereas NIPT offers clinically validated screening for chromosomal conditions and may also give sex information depending on laboratory reporting.

RESULTS & TIMEFRAMES

During your ultrasound scan, the sonographer will provide immediate verbal feedback and discuss any observations made during the examination.

For standard blood tests, results are typically available within 2 working days after the samples have reached the laboratory.

Next day blood tests, when booked within the designated time windows, are processed to provide results within one working day.

TREATMENT PATHWAY

Before your appointment

During your appointment

After your appoinment

Before your appointment, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen and staying well hydrated to help improve scan clarity.

Please bring any relevant NHS or maternity records, previous scans or notes that may assist the sonographer and follow any specific instructions provided for blood tests.

During your appointment, the ultrasound scan will be performed while you lie comfortably, with gel applied to the abdomen. The sonographer will guide you through the procedure, explaining what is being observed and answering any questions.

For blood tests, a clinician will collect the sample using standard sterile techniques, ensuring your comfort and safety throughout.

After your appointment, you will receive verbal feedback from the sonographer regarding the ultrasound images and observations.

Blood test samples will be sent to certified laboratories and results will be communicated as agreed, with follow-up guidance provided if any clinically relevant findings are identified.

You may be advised to liaise with your GP or maternity care provider for further support or investigation if required.
